Creativity Academies

Creativity Academies Bill is working its way through the Legislature!

February 15th

Bill HB2587 entitled, "MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO ESTABLISH CREATIVITY ACADEMIES" has already passed several house committees, thanks to the generous time and support of many NMA students and friends. Led by Georja Skinner and Ted Liu (pictured above) from the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism and in partnership with the UH Community Colleges and the Department of Education, this bill seeks to develop a Creativity Academy program which would consist of a turnkey digital media curriculum that will be implemented in middle and high schoola across the state of Hawaii.

The Creativity Academies seeks to infuse science, technology, engineering, and mathematics course curriculum with animation, game development, digital media, and creative publishing projects, blending art and science into a comprehensive lesson plan. It is an interesting and exciting way to introduce a wide range of academic and professional disciplines to high school and middle school students. Kapi'olani Community College's STEM program has already had great success with students using a turnkey inter-disciplinary curriculum that will act as a model for the curriculum that will be developed for the proposed Creativity Academies. Using Art 112 as the backbone of the curriculum, students will be introduced to the basics of computer graphics and will study how vector and raster graphics are the core building blocks that can be generated, manipulated, and animated to enhance our view of the world and how we study the world we live in today.

The bill has already passed the House Committee on Tourism & Culture, House Committees on Education and Higher Education, and the Committee on Finance. For more details read the HB2587 Bill and monitor the status of the bill.
