KCC New Media Arts Continuing Education Courses

New Media Arts offers a coordinated series of non-credit and credit classes. Our courses include the well-known and comprehensive digital imaging software program Photoshop, as well a look at the popular web authoring tool Dreamweaver. In addition, we will be offering a new Digital Imaging Workshop series, digital printing, studio lighting, digital recording, and photography courses. All classes are held in the New Media Arts PCATT Lab in Kopiko 202.

In addition to the non-credit courses, New Media Arts offers an Associate in Science degree in Animation and the Associate of Science in Interface Design. For more information about degree programs in New Media Arts, please contact Teri Durland at 734-9290.

Customized Training in New Media Arts

Kapi‘olani Community College can develop non-credit courses and workshops specifically designed to meet the needs of your company or organization. Our customized training is a cost-effective and convenient way to enhance an employee’s knowledge and skills. We design the curriculum and materials for instruction and arrange all sessions. Customized classes meet either in the New Media Lab on campus or on-site, where employees learn in their workplace environment. Introduction to Recording and Music Technology (featuring Apple’s Garage Band)

Students will record, arrange, mix, and produce music using Apple’s Garage Band. Knowledge in music theory is not required. Course Topics: Real and Software Instruments, MIDI sequencing, digital effects, loops, recording and mixing techniques, audio and MIDI editing, syncing music and video, podcasts, Instructor: Michael Kato, professional musician and experienced teacher, graduate of the Guitar Institute of Technology, Hollywood, California.

Adobe Photoshop Basics

Adobe’s Photoshop software program is the industry standard for photographers, artists, and graphic designers who want to manipulate, retouch, or create digital images and illustrations. This class will give you a hands-on introduction to the workspace and tools of Photoshop CS3 needed to edit, create, and manipulate digital photographs and art works. We will cover layers, color and tonal correction, selection tools, image adjustment and manipulation, compositing images, and masks. (Class is suitable for all beginners who know just the fundamentals of computer and mouse use. Bring your digital images to class.) Instructor: Kim MacDonald has worked as chief photographer and photography services manager at Habitat for Humanity International for the past nine years. During that time she has worked in over 30 countries photographing tens of thousands of images of beauty, tragedy, and everyday life in countless communities. She also guided the organization in the initiation and use of a digital asset management system, photography workshops, and their transition from film to digital photography. She has covered the tsunami in Asia, Katrina devastation in the Gulf, annual events with President Jimmy Carter, and many, many other adventures. Her photos have been published in numerous magazines, newspapers, and textbooks around the world. And she loves to teach!

Adobe’s Photoshop software program is the industry standard for photographers who want to enhance, retouch, restore, and manipulate photographs. This class is designed for photographers who have a slight familiarity with Photoshop but want to go beyond the basics in enhancing and retouching their photographs. Bring your own photographs (or scans) to work on. Topics covered include: sharpening, color and lighting correction, portrait enhancement, photo restoration, darkroom and layer effects, filters, photo/text layout and design for albums or portfolios, and output concerns. (Class is suitable for photographers serious about working with their photos on the computer; a slight familiarity with Photoshop is helpful. Bring your digital photos to class.)

Selecting a Digital Point & Shoot Camera

Are you about to take the leap to a digital camera for the first time, or want to upgrade and get a new model point and shoot, but feel overwhelmed by the choices and options? Is it really all about megapixels? What else should you be concerned with in a camera purchase? How do you know what’s best for you? This one session class will give you easy-to-understand guidelines for making the right choice for you or your family.

Understanding Your Digital Point & Shoot Camera

Have you purchased a digital point and shoot camera in the last few months – or the last few years – and still aren’t really sure how to use it? Digital point and shoots give you many more options and opportunities than did their film counterparts, but there’s also a steep learning curve that can lead to confusion and frustration. Get to know and really use and enjoy your digital camera! This class will cover all the beginner level information you need to understand your camera and take great photos. Topics covered include camera settings such as shooting modes, ISO, white balance, file sizes, flash control, and image review plus the basics on how to download and use your digital photos. (Class is suitable for all beginners. Please bring your camera, owner’s manual, and any accessories to class. If you don’t yet own a digital point and shoot camera, consider taking the Selecting a Digital Point & Shoot Camera class first.)

Digital Photography Fundamentals

Whether you’re working with a digital SLR or an adjustable point and shoot, this class is for you if you don’t yet understand shooting modes, shutter speeds, f-stops, depth of field, motion blur, or white balance choices. Take your photography beyond automatic settings and hoping for the best. This class will also cover composition techniques for improving your photographs and getting the most from yourself and your camera. (Class is suitable for beginners wanting to become more capable amateur photographers. If you don’t yet understand most of the topics in the Understanding Your Digital Point & Shoot Camera class, please consider taking that class first. Please bring your camera and any accessories to class.)

Working With Photographs on the Computer – NEW!

Want to understand what to do with your digital photos or photo CD once you have them? Have you been slow to even take the pictures off your camera because you’re not sure what to do? This class will cover the basics of downloading photos from your camera (or CD) to a computer, organizing them, and then working with them to make simple alterations, crops, and enhancements, and then outputting them for email, prints, photo books and other uses. We’ll work with free software such as Picasa and Blurb. (Class is suitable for all beginners who know just the fundamentals of computer, mouse, and internet use. Travel Photography

Want to make the most of your photography on a trip? Get great travel photos with the knowledge you’ll gain from this class – learn how to plan for the trip photographically, handle the photo logistics, and take great photos on location. Topics covered include: what and how to pack your gear, how to deal with shooting more photos than you have room for on you digital card, capturing a sense of place, photographing landscapes, activities, details, and daily life, making cultural portraits, working with available light, and creating a travel photo essay – output as a slide show, print album, or webpage. (Class is suitable for anyone with a basic understanding of their digital or film camera and its settings – simple point and shoots to adjustable SLRs – who want to improve their skills for taking great travel photos. If you don’t yet understand most of the topics in the Understanding Your Digital Point & Shoot Camera class, please consider taking that class first. ‘Ohana Chronicles: Documenting History – NEW!

Gather resources to make your family, personal, or community history come to life on DVD! This workshop will introduce various methods of documenting life using photos, film, and historical documents. You will gain insight into resources in the community that will enhance your interview, camera, and editing skills to complete a professional project. We will discuss free photo and video editing software and you will see sample video of photo journaling, documenting elder and family history, and making movies out of exciting travel adventures – the possibilities are endless! No experience necessary. Instructor: Janette Sargent-Hamill holds a BA in Gerontology and is an Independent Filmmaker. She has worked in the field of aging since 1994 and has been producing documentaries since 1996. Janette’s vision is to share her passion and resources with everyone who would like to preserve the personal history of an elder, the dying words of a loved one, or record the tantalizing tales of a community. Anyone can do this with a little guidance and support. It is important that we get started!

Introduction to Studio Lighting – NEW!

Have you ever wanted to learn to use strobe (flash) lighting to photograph small objects or people? If so, this workshop will introduce you to the basics of setting up studio strobe lights and recommendations on low-cost studio lighting kits for your own studio. Instructor: David Cornwell graduated from the University of Michigan with multiple degrees in fine art. Based in Hawai‘i, David’s commercial photography assignments have taken him to domestic and international locations, frequently to create images of resorts and architecture. Some of his clients include the Hawai‘i Convention Center, Microsoft, Coca Cola, Dr. Pepper, Ocean Spray Cranberries, Polynesian Cultural Center, Alaska Visitors Bureau, Life Magazine, National Geographic Magazine, Ritz Carlton, Kahala Hotel & Resort, Victoria Ward Properties, Top of Waikiki Restaurant, and Sheraton Hotels.

Dreamweaver Basics

Learn the basic tools and techniques to prepare and combine text and images in the creation of web pages with Dreamweaver. Stake out your “URL” territory, design your page, upload pictures, post your observations about the world, and let your imagination go. The World Wide Web is waiting. The 21st Century is here and making a web page is easier than you think. Prerequisite: General knowledge of the Windows or Macintosh environments. Instructor: Malcolm Mekaru graduated with a BFA from the University of Hawa’ii and worked in television and commercial production. He is a software engineer working on user interfaces and computer generated imagery.

Digital Printing

Digital Printing Workshop – NEW!

This is a course for anyone who has a digital camera who would like to make creative archival prints with an ink-jet printer. We will discuss the basic techniques of color management, resolution, image sizing, and printing surfaces. Additionally, we will look at hardware and software as well as papers and framing techniques. We will discuss and explore what a good print looks like and learn to print on regular and fine art papers. The class will use a new wide format Epson 7800 printer that can print up to 22" in width. Participants should bring a selection of 5-10 images on CD or thumb drives; each participant will finish the class with two archival prints ready for framing. Additional prints and supplies may be purchased, if needed. Pre-requisite: A working knowledge of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, or Paint Shop Pro is essential. Instructor: Kirsten Rae Simonsen's work has been exhibited in Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Seattle, New York, London, and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She is represented by Whitespace Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia. After studying art in Bali, Indonesia, she received her MFA from the University of Chicago. Her summers are spent co-leading an Art and Design Program in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She lectures at Kapi'olani Community College and the University of Hawai‘i-Manoa.

This class will introduce you to methods of selecting, masking, and combining parts of photographs using a method called compositing. Participants should bring a selection of your own photographs on a CD or thumb drive to use in your multi-image compositions. A basic understanding of Photoshop is a must to appreciate what you will learn in the class.

This second Digital Imaging Workshop will build on the basic selecting, masking and compositing techniques learned in the introductory class. Basic compositing techniques will be reviewed but the emphasis will be on more advanced and refined techniques for making multi-image compositions through enhancement layers for image color and value control. Participants should bring a selection of your own photographs on a CD or thumb drive to use in your multi-image compositions.

Digital Imaging Workshop: Using Adobe Photoshop – Advanced

This third Digital Imaging Workshop continues to extend your compositing skills using techniques learned in the first two workshops. The focus of this workshop will be to further refine your compositing techniques in a larger format. You will learn the difference in preparing your compositions for use on the Internet and for printing. You will have an opportunity to print your images using the new wide-format Epson 7800 printer. Digital printing paper and supplies may be purchased as needed. Participants should bring a selection of your own photographs on a CD or thumb drive to use in your multi-image compositions.

New Media Arts Hosts DASH (Digital Art Association of Hawai‘i)

The Digital Art Society of Hawaii (DASH) encourages and supports all fine artists melding their traditional disciplines with digital imaging. DASH is proud of its eclectic and accomplished membership of professionals and will continue to provide a melting pot for ideas and interests to all visual artists. Guest speakers and presentations, show and tell, exhibition opportunities and technical advice are prominent components of the monthly meetings. The monthly DASH newsletter and E-mail exchanges keep DASH members apprised of the latest information on the arts and artists. If you are a fine artist and compelled to expand your creative horizons, DASH would like to welcome you to explore us. New Media Arts Hosts the New Arts Lecture Series

The New Arts Lecture Series seeks to stimulate and motivate attendees by providing opportunities to interact personally with artists, animators, and media technicians from a global pool. These presentations and workshops provide valuable industry-based and aesthetic insight as well as inspiration from experts.

The New Arts Lecture Series brings leading industry professionals to the island in a unique forum that includes a community lecture followed by discussion. The next day the artist presents a hands-on workshop in the New Media Arts PCATT Lab at Kapi‘olani Community College.

These lectures and workshops are free and open to the public. A limited number of computers are available for the workshops for $60. Carter Goodrich

Carter Goodrich is a character illustrator and designer. He designed all the characters for Sony's Open Season, and was a character designer for Dreamworks’ Prince of Egypt and for Pixar's Monsters and Finding Nemo. He also designs and illustrates covers for the New Yorker magazine and children's books.

Brenda Chapman

Brenda Chapman was the director for Prince of Egypt and was the first woman to direct a feature animation. She was a story artist for Disney's The Lion King and is currently a story artist for Pixar.

Craig Mullins
